Job Descriptions
Editor in Chief: Selects all other editors, oversees daily operations and is responsible for the overall content of the online and print editions. Responsible for updating the Sundial policy handbook. Coordinates a daily budget meeting with key editors. This is a yearlong position.
News Editor: Responsible for developing and tracking story ideas, primary assignment editor, coordinates investigative stories, gives content a first read and edits stories with reporters. Works with other editors to coordinate content for print and online. Manages and posts content on website. Assists with designing the print edition, works with Visual Editor to design the front page.
Live News Editor: Assists News Editor with editing content and developing assignments, with special focus on updating the website. Coordinates day-to-day coverage of local and campus events, lectures, “In The Newsroom” stories on csun.edu, and breaking news. Organizes reporter beats, including one for each college, campus police, Associated Students, etc. Works with the Online Editor to get stories posted on the website in a timely manner as well as the Social Media Editor to post breaking news immediately. Assists with designing the print edition.
Features Editor: Responsible for developing, tracking, developing assignments and editing story ideas associated with profiles, in-depth features and trend stories. Works with other section editors to coordinate stories that relate to other stories running in the print edition. Works with the Visual Editor to design the print edition. Manages and posts content on Web site.
Online Editor: Responsible for working with key editors and staff to generate and develop unique content for the website as well as coordinates how the content is presented on the website. Manages and oversees website as a whole, including comments. Works with Photo and other section editors to determine at least three visually appealing stories per day to put on the websites front page image. Works with the Live News Editor to post breaking news stories and create a front page image for the website. Should have knowledge of SEO, html, analytics, php, css and word press. Uploads pdfs of print edition onto website, makes plug ins, posts promotional material and advertisements. Is on call for any problems that may come up in the website, emergency maintenance.
Photo Editor: Works with staff on all visual projects for both print and online formats. Works with the Assignment Editor to determine what photos are needed for all sections, as well as assigning photo essays. Preps photos for print and online editions. Manages and posts content on website.
Asst. Photo Editor: Assists Photo Editor on visual projects for both print and online formats. Works with the Assignment Editor to determine what photos are needed for all sections, as well as assigning photo essays. Preps photos for print and online editions. Manages and posts content on website.
Multimedia Editor: Works with the Assignment Editor to plan multimedia pieces for all sections. Helps staff with editing. Is constantly on the lookout for potential multimedia pieces around campus. Works with the Photo Editors on photo slideshows. Manages and posts content on website.
Visual Editor/Art Director: Responsible for the overall visual content of the Daily Sundial. Works with each section editor to design the layout of their section. Coordinates and delegates art, such as illustrations, cartoons, graphics and layout. Works with the Art Director on more complicated visuals. Responsible for the overall look and presentation of the Daily Sundial. Reports to the editor in chief.
Social Media Coordinator: Handles social media in order to distribute and promote content and create conversations with audience. Focuses on engaging, developing and growing an audience. Works with each section editor to know what is unique, interesting and worth promoting in each story through social media, as well as creating online polls for stories.
Arts and Culture Editor: Responsible for developing, tracking, assigning and editing story ideas associated with arts, culture and entertainment. Gives content a first read and edits stories with reporters. Works with Visual Editor and Art Director to design a dynamic layout for Culture Shock each week. Works with the Online Editor to post timely stories and coverage online daily and the Social Media Editor to promote all content. Manages and posts content on website.
Sports Editor: Responsible for daily and long-term coverage of campus and other sports issues, games, features and columns. Oversees the sports social media effort. Responsible for design of daily print pages. Manages and posts content on website.
Assistant Sports Editor: Helps the Sports Editor with coverage of campus and other sports issues, games, features and columns. Assists with design of daily pages and posting of stories to website, helps manage social media.
Opinion Editor: Coordinates, edits and writes staff editorials, columns, other commentaries and letters to the editor. Works with the Visual Editor on editorial cartoons. Engages writers and contributors outside the newsroom staff. Responsible for design of daily print pages. Manages and posts content on website.
Copy Editors: Responsible for editing content, writing headlines and proofing print pages and online content.
Recruitment Editor: Responsible for seeking and engaging contributors via online/social media campaigns, open house events, classroom visits, etc. Works with each section editor to find out what areas they need more coverage in and tries to find contributors for such coverage. Assists with assigning and editing early assignments and acting as liaison between contributors and section editor. Assures smooth transition from contributor to staff member. May have to help train non-journalism students to understand AP style.
